Samuel Adams was called the Father of the American Revolution. He was a founding member of
the Sons of Liberty. He organized the Boston Tea Party and signed the Declaration of Independence. Here are some of his best quotes:
“We have proclaimed to the world our determination ‘to die freemen, rather than to live slaves.’ We have appealed to Heaven for the justice of our cause, and in Heaven we have placed our trust. Numerous have been the manifestations of God’s Providence in sustaining us.”
“We have been reduced to distress, and the arm of Omnipotence has raised us up. Let us still rely in humble confidence on Him who is mighty to save. Good tidings will soon arrive. We shall never be abandoned by Heaven while we act worthy of its aid and protection.”
“What a man has honesty acquired is absolutely his own, which he may freely give but cannot
be taken from him without his consent… Now what liberty can there be, where property is taken away without consent?”
“The utopian schemes of leveling and a community of goods, are as visionary and impractical as those which vest all property in the crown. These ideas are arbitrary, despotic, and in ourgovernment, unconstitutional.”
“It is in the interest of tyrants to reduce the people to ignorance and vice. For they cannot live in any country where virtue and knowledge prevail. The religion and public liberty of a people are intimately connected; their interests are interwoven, they cannot subsist separately; and therefore they rise and fall together.”
“For this reason, it is always observable, that those who are combined to destroy the people’s liberties, practice every art to poison their morals.”
“No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders.”
“Liberty will not long survive the total extinction of morals.”
“If virtue & knowledge are diffused among the People, they will never be enslav’d. This will be their great security.”
